There is plenty being written about unfair bank charges, but the banks would have us believe that they are not unfair and they would dearly like to continue charging hefty fees to their customers. The legal battle taking place at the moment centres on the argument that it does not cost the bank £25, or even £35 when a customer goes overdrawn by a few pounds or makes a monthly payment a few days late or has a direct debit that fails to clear.

A single one off charge may be a bitter pill to swallow, none of us like to part with our hard earned cas, but it may not be the end of the world, you'll pay the charge and move on. But it isn't always this simple.

Maybe you are waiting for some money to go into your bank account, but while waiting your monthly mobile phone direct debit attempts to take funds from your account. Unfortunately your money hasn't cleared yet so the direct debit fails, maybe your gas and electric are due around the same time and the same thing happens, very quickly you may incur several fees. The size of the fees might mean you can't clear them all straight away, so with insufficient funds to pay these fees there is a high chance that you'll start getting hit with more fees when it is time to pay the bills again.

This process can continue with your fees getting larger and larger turning into a crippling burden.

This is exactly the sort of situation that is being deemed as unfair and rightly so.
